Household Hints

I received an email last year with several household hints and ideas.  There was no info as to where these tips were found.  I might want to remember these some day - so I'm posting them here:

I found that this post I posted today had some technical issues - like the pictures weren't showing up.
Since the post is just pictures with words over them there was no way to know what the great ideas / household tips were.
Well, I got into my post to try to fix it and all of the pictures came up just fine, but somehow they were not showing in the post when it was published.

I've re-saved the pictures in a new place and hope that fixes the problem  - if you see pictures, then you'll know that I was successful in my attempt.  If not, I apologize.

Just in case, I'm adding a description of each picture so that the ideas will survive.  :)

To keep kids from falling out of bed, put a pool noodle under the fitted sheet (on top of the edge of the bed).
---
Use a staple remover to open/separate the key ring to add keys

---
Put a nylon over the end of the vacuum hose to find tiny items like earrings.
 ---
Turn an old bottle into a simple cord holder, and hang it over the plug.
---
Toothpaste might clean up hazy car headlights???  Should try it!
 ---
place a rubber band around a paint can to wipe the brush on and keep it off the side of the can.
 ---
cut paper towel rolls open and use them as a cuff to keep your wrapping paper tube rolled up.

For several years now, I have been using hair bands to hold my wrapping paper together. It works great, but it looks like toilet paper or paper towel rolls would too.

I hope this post works now!

Helpful Cleaning Hints

Young House Love shares their cleaning secret.  They used this combo on an old dresser to help remove the years of grime and make it "shine".  I have used Magic Eraser and find it to pretty awesome stuff.  I have used vinegar in cleaning and find it to be pretty awesome too.  I've never put them together though - on to a new adventure.

Bottles / Jars / Cans

Saving bottles and jars has been a thing I do for many years now, and it's getting worse - probably because I have more ideas on how to use them now.
Here is a great post from Yellow Brick Home on how to clean wax out of a jar.

Goo Be Gone, and ...

I found this idea at Krafty Kat

Imagine that!
She also lists 20 other uses for Baby Oil for too.
I did used to use it for my eye makeup remover many years ago, but eventually I decided that I didn't like the oily feel it seemed to leave in my eyes.

I keep adhesive remover in my kitchen drawer for the stickers and labels I want to remove, they are the pads we get from Apria (health care supplies) for hubbies Hickman Line dressing removal.

Those adhesive removers, nice as they are, don't work as well as some others I have found - that's why they are tucked under the sink for non-skin use. Oh, they work nice for taking the leftover band aid sticky off the skin, but not removing the large dressing over a Hickman Line.

I know I spend too much on others I do like, (shhh! don't tell hubby, cause he won't like to know they are more expensive and he might make me stop) but at least it helps take that bandage off his skin without as much discomfort (I can tell ... brave as he is ... it's not a big difference, but there is one - shhh! don't tell him that either).

I wonder what the doctors would say if I started using Baby Oil to remove the dressing/bandage?

Here is a great cleanser I found from Food.com
Tub and Shower Magic
We tried this cleanser and liked it - there is a *strong smell as you work with it but it works great -  just open a window ... it's worth it!
*We did use it in two bathrooms at the same end of the house, at the same time, so we were pretty much asking for it.

-----

Years ago ... many years ago ... in a different home ... we needed a strong cleanser to help us clean up a bathroom that just wouldn't smell clean no matter what cleanser I used.  I found a cleanser recipe in a magazine and tried it.  I was amazed at the difference.  I have kept that recipe and used it on occasion.  I share with you today.

1/2 cup plain ammonia
1/4 cup white vinegar
2 TB. baking soda
2 quarts warm water

-----

Isn't vinegar a wonderful thing?  It works wonders on hard water stains and does so much more.  Just don't use it to try to remove color on anything, because it sets in color - like with Easter Egg dye.
I used to mix it with some water and pour it over my hair just after I washed it, to help remove any soap scum.  Of course this wasn't daily, but on occasion, especially the day before a perm.

I found a web site that has a long list of uses for Vinegar - one I want to remember - Vinegar Tips - maybe you'll find it interesting too.  Be sure to click on each page - there are many ideas for each - garden, cleaning, laundry, health, automotive, pets, cooking.

Deep Cleaning Continues

I started my deep cleaning the first week of January and really didn't get very far into it until I had completely stopped and moved on to something else.

My mother-in-law passed away and we began to clean out their home (the homestead), since my father-in-law had passed away about 6 months earlier.
That was a big project and continues to be ... still not done.

That also means that we inherited a few items that we needed to find a place for in our home. So ... things began to shift.

My stuff room is still the first room to tackle in my home, but it really has been taking a long time, because I keep stuffing it with boxes and things from the homestead. There came a point where I was working more in my stuff room than at the homestead so I did get a few things done here. I'll share a bit.

One of my favorite things ... new to my stuff room ... is the little butter cream cupboard that belonged to grandma (MIL's mother) and became ours. Once a pantry, it now houses cards and papers and beads and wire and some history.

The color isn't true in this photo, but it seems that this pinterest post shows the more true color of the unit.  Great color name!

Benjamin Moore Old World Romance

On top sits ribbon and jewelry to the side. (I do need to go through and organize the boxes of ribbon still - another day.)

On the wall next to it are some cute wall hooks with other jewelry on it.

Before Photos really are embarrassing, and the After Photos in this post are only some better.

It's still a stuffed room ... but that is what it's for so I'm okay with that. I'm so happy to have it!

There are still plenty of boxes and piles of things to go through and organize - like those things seen in the lower right side of the last photo, so the other parts of the room are not yet shown. Maybe I'll spare you those for a very long time ... maybe until I get all of my scrap booking up to date ... and that could be a very long time if I'm still intent on deep cleaning my whole house ... and I am.

It's spring time and the yard is calling me ... and the garage ... so, I'll do a little more in the stuff room and then choose another place to attack ... while at the same time trying to finish the homestead place too.

Lastly ... it's been fun to see the precious things that belonged to our loving parents, and it has consumed much of our time, and there are many projects on the To Do List to help us keep some of those precious things (photos, histories, etc.) close at hand and close to our hearts.

Soooo Much To Do!
I'm gonna get up and goin' again!
Just stopped for a quick post ... okay, not so quick post ... but it was fun!

I'm gonna try this!

My shower heads all need cleaned - I was thinking of replacing them, but I'll try this first.

Where do I begin?

Every room in my house needs my attention. Each needs a deep cleaning. Some need a remodeling, or a completion of the remodeling that began a while ago ... even a long while ago. Because each desperately needs attention - where do I begin?

I decide to begin by using the process of elimination. Not eliminating the room from my list and my attention, but putting that room (or those rooms) at the end of the list, because it would be more beneficial to wait for a later date, for some / whatever reason.

Problem is - I could wait for every room for some / whatever reason.

So - I begin my list, not by elimination as much as by what is coming up next ... or first at this point and time.

Thinking carefully and as thoroughly as possible at this moment I decide that first things first means putting away the Christmas decor and putting back all the main decor in my home. BIG TASK!
But, before I can do that I should make sure that my Stuff room is ready - clean and orderly so that I can get in and out without damage to myself or my stuff.

Sounds like a good plan - a big plan - I need a plan of attack for just that room.
I take time now to look and decide what I like and do not like about that room and what I will leave and what I will remove or change in that room. Oh, wow! It's a big picture to look at, even though I've narrowed the wide screen (being the whole house) to the small screen (just my stuff room).

I've been collecting things in boxes to take to Goodwill, and I've an idea that the stack will get bigger as I take on this house one room at a time. This is the year to simplify and de-junk and ....
I just thought a thought I think quite often - it could be very beneficial if I had to move - if I had to move I think I'd get rid of a lot of things that I just can't bring myself to get rid of.

Now I begin ... with My Stuff Room ... where I stuff stuff on top of stuff ... and hope to get rid of the non-essential stuff before stuffing any more stuff.

Well, first things first means that I need to take a photo, because I want before and after photos of each room I attack.

...

I tried with my old camera because I wanted to just take the photos and download them onto the computer in a hurry. Well, there is a reason I got a new camera for Christmas...I need it! The old camera didn't work for me after several minutes of trying to get a good photo. (It's had problems ever since we visited the butterfly room at the Seattle Science Center last summer - no, last, last summer. It doesn't always take the photo, it doesn't stay on the right setting, and it is crazy.) It's time to really say good-bye to that once fabulous camera that I once loved, and hello to the new one. So I pause to do so before putting photos of my stuff room on this post ...

...

...

Here are my before photos - as is, is what you get here!

Wow huh? It's a mess of stuff!

I make no promises to have this room completed by any certain day or time ... well, sometime this month I hope, and better if sometime this week. We'll see! I just know that today is the day to begin, even though I'm a bit slow from feeling a bit sick yesterday. I'm on the mend!

I also know that if I blog it, it might come true! :)

After photos will come when it is done..., when it does come true!  (HERE)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
